Last but Not least

At the end of this project that was successful from every side. I would like to write my Final word about it.

The self-initiated project was one of the most flourishing projects for this year. I think if I had a chance to change something it’s going to be the posters. I am confident about the concept of it. But I think I could play more with the type and the background. And I wanted to do more idea’s and more versions for the posters.

About the video: I think as the first documentary for me it was successful with a lot of challenges. I also learned a lot of new things. First of all I always thought interviews were easy, but what I learned that it is really not easy to control people and also choosing the right place for the interview. There was a lot of noise around. So the sound was not clear. But at the end I managed to have four different interviewee. I also had a problem in deleting the video by mistake and I learned to copy my sequence all the time and back up my work. Another thing is the time management I had some other projects going on with this. This was another challenge for me to achieve all the other projects on time.

Video in progress

It have been a long time since i updated the blog.
I am in the process of Both Video and Posters.

In my Video: i will be documenting the life in the uae and i am including interviews with young Emirati's. My questions are :
1-What do you know about you heritage?
2-What does it mean to you to be Emirati?
3- Do you think the traditional Dress code will vanish away one day ?
4- What do you think of the future of the UAE young generation ?

In my documenting i found a lot of difficulties.
such as 'people not cooping with me.
Some of the interviewee didn't take it seriously.

But others have been really helpful.

In my posters i am trying to combine the heritage with modernity. i tried to involve something that is really popular among Young Emirati.
this is my first poster.

An interview with one of the participant of "Be Emirati, Act Emirati" Campaign

-How did you reach people ?
through our be emirati act emirati campaign that took place at zayed university, abu dhabi university, alhosn university and HCT.

-What was the reaction ?
students were questioning themselves if whether media has affected them or not. our strong images made students realize how they are losing their identity while not knowing.

-is there any negative sides u want to share ?
no

-Do u think there is enough awareness among young emirati of loosing there culture and heritage ?!
very poor awareness, our young generations do not know how precious their national identity is, especially in our case as the minority of the population. we could easily fade away.

Regards,
Moza AlDhaheiry.

Sheikh Zayed Once Said

"Future generations will be living in a world that is very different from that to which we are accustomed. It is essential that we prepare ourselves and our children for that new world.”

Sheikh Zayed Quotes

“progress and renaissance are not to be measured by reinforced concrete structures, but rather by building human being and providing citizens with everything that make them live in happiness and decent life.”

“A nation without a past is a nation without a present or future."

“We should preserve our heritage because it is our origin and base, and we have to embrace our origins.”

“The understanding of heritage enlightens one’s judgment and illuminates one’s life”

“Our people should not forget their past and how their ancestors used to live and on what they relied on in their lives. The more they come to feel and know more about their heritage, the more they are interested in their country and willing to defend it.”

“Woman is the maker of generations, ”

Be Emirati .. Act Emirati

A really Great Conference by 4 Students for Zayed University.

Heritage OR culture !

I was wondering in the previous days about the concept of my project ?!

Is it the heritage ? or the culture ? or its both together !!
what would be more attractive to young Generation ?!

After the last meeting, i reconsidered the definition in mind about  cultural heritage.
i think heritage is something to be respected or a memory from our grandparents something physical.
On the other hand culture is the behavior, beliefs and values that a group of people accept throughout generations.
At some points these behaviors change due to the time changes.

What is Heritage ?

Heritage and Identity
"Heritage is the combination of all those things that make us, as individuals, the people we are and, on a larger scale, make us the nation we are," writes Geraldine O’Brien

Heritage and Culture
"Heritage is my love of Australian history, looking at the lives and achievements of the convicts. It is also the exploits of the Roman emperors," begins Maria Geracitano in a discussion of her dual heritage.

Heritage is all the memories our grandfathers left for us that we have value today and pass it to the new generation in the future.

Visuals

Some of my photography work.

Research

Way of Life

The culture and society of the UAE are a blend of traditional and modern elements. The religion of Islam and the heritage of a traditional, tribal society form the basis of a stable and essentially conservative social structure. There is, however, a decidedly tolerant and cosmopolitan atmosphere—most notable in the emirate of Dubai—that gives resident non-Emiris opportunities to enjoy their own cultural and religious organizations. For most older women the home remains the sphere of activity; younger women, benefiting from their access to modern education, are playing an ever-wider role in the society. An estimated 13 percent of the UAE's labor force is female, and women are increasingly represented in government posts.

Reflecting the mix of modern and traditional influences, clothing styles in the UAE are both Western and indigenous. Most Emiri men wear the dishdasha, a white, loose-fitting garment that is comfortable in hot weather. Most women wear the enveloping black abaya and a face mask called the burka, although this tradition is beginning to be abandoned by younger, educated women.

Most of the population enjoys modern air-conditioned housing, either in apartments or villa-style houses. The small rural population lives in a more traditional style, and some Bedouins still live in nomadic ways, in tents.

Even though traditional sports such as falconry and camel racing remain popular in the UAE, newer sports, particularly soccer, have an enthusiastic following. The country also has a strong horse racing tradition; the annual Dubai World Cup is one of the richest events in the sport.

Culture

Traditional social rituals remain important, especially the Eid al-Fitr and the Eid al-Adha, the festivals that mark the end of Ramadan (the month of fasting) and the conclusion of the hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) on the Islamic calendar. On special occasions Emiris perform traditional dances to musical accompaniment.

The commitment to preserving traditional arts and culture is evident at both the popular and governmental levels. Each emirate devotes considerable resources to maintaining museums and libraries. The Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation sponsors major events on artistic, social, and other themes featuring Arab and other cultural traditions throughout the year. The foundation's Center for Documentation and Research is a national archive where scholars from around the world can research the history of the UAE back to the earliest times. Ash Shariqah has a fine arts museum and is home to a lively theater and literary scene.

Social Issues

Although disparities in the standard of living do exist between the emirates, there is almost no poverty in the UAE because its leadership has devoted a large part of Abu Dhabi's wealth to the welfare of the poorer emirates. Drug trafficking and other crimes are not uncommon but confined mainly to the expatriate community.

March 9, 09 " Draft Idea's"

Today i had a meeting with Mischa, i discussed some other idea's with him which are:

1-Heritage Week "my very 1st idea"

2-Plastic Bags.

3-Constructions.

4-Economics Circus.

But we settled on either :
a)Continuing with Heritage But " growing " the project.
b)The plastic bags ( pollution, environment, economics....ect)

So my main concern is will i be able to find something about the heritage and continue with the heritage week.
Or start with plastic Bags.

Your opinions are appreciated,

My draft idea " Heritage"

My 1st idea:

There will be a heritage week during April at al Bastakya, they are offering a free kiosk of Emirati artists and designers. I thought of taking one kiosk there and make a new identity for a shop. I also have to sell something, which is related to heritage.

The main outcomes:

1-    Minimum of 3 designs for T-shirts.

2-    Minimum of 3-notebook design.

3-    Logo (an identity)

4-    Poster

5-    Flyer

6-    Documentary about the selling at al Bastakya.
